Besides PLA, what other materials are used for biodegradable plastic bags?
Due to the increasingly serious white pollution caused by traditional plastic bags, and with the continuous improvement of people's environmental awareness, biodegradable plastic bags, PLA fully biodegradable plastic bags, fully degradable plastic bags and various new degradable material plastic bags have been launched. Today, Shunxingyuan Packaging, a professional flexible packaging manufacturer, will talk about the most representative materials of biodegradable plastic bags.

I. What is biological degradable plastic bags?
Biodegradable plastic bags refer to plastic bags that degrade under the action of naturally occurring microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae in natural environments such as soil and/or sand, and/or under specific conditions such as composting, anaerobic digestion, or in aqueous culture, and ultimately completely degrade into carbon dioxide (CO2) or/and methane (CH4), water (H2O), mineral inorganic salts of the contained elements, and new biomass.
The most well-known biodegradable plastic bag material: PLA

PLA molecular formula
Polylactic acid ( PLA) is a new type of biodegradable material made from starch raw materials derived from renewable plant resources (such as corn). It has good biodegradability and can be completely degraded by microorganisms in nature after use, eventually producing carbon dioxide and water without polluting the environment. This is very beneficial for environmental protection and is a recognized environmentally friendly material.
The degradation of polylactic acid PLA is divided into two stages: 1) First, it is purely chemically hydrolyzed into lactic acid monomers; 2) The lactic acid monomers are degraded into carbon dioxide and water under the action of microorganisms. Food cups made of polylactic acid can be completely degraded in just 60 days, truly achieving a dual effect of ecology and economy.
III. Besides PLA, what other biodegradable plastic bag materials are there?
1. Poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA)

PHB synthesis process
PHA is a different structure of aliphatic copolyester synthesized by microorganisms through fermentation of various carbon sources. The most common ones are poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), polyhydroxyvalerate (PHV), and copolymers of PHB and PHV (PHBV). Main uses: disposable tableware, non-woven fabrics, packaging materials, agricultural mulch films, toys, packaging films, adhesives, fibers, and various other degradable products.
2. Poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL)

PCL molecular formula
Poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) is a low-melting-point polymer obtained by ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, with a melting point of only 62℃. Research on the degradation of PCL began in 1976. PCL can be completely decomposed by microorganisms in both anaerobic and aerobic environments. Compared with PLA, PCL has better hydrophobicity but a slower degradation rate; at the same time, its synthesis process is simple and the cost is lower. PCL has excellent processing properties and can be made into films and other products using ordinary plastic processing equipment.
3. Polyester - PBS/PBSA
PBS uses aliphatic succinic acid and butanediol as the main raw materials. It can meet the demand through petrochemical products, and it can also be produced through biological fermentation pathways from renewable agricultural products in nature such as starch, cellulose, and glucose, thereby realizing a green circular production from nature and returning to nature. Moreover, the raw materials produced by biological fermentation technology can also significantly reduce raw material costs, thereby further reducing the cost of PBS.
Compared with similar products, the advantages of polyester biodegradable plastics:
1) Good heat resistance. This promotes its promotion in the catering industry;
2) Low processing requirements;
3) Easy to store, hydrolysis resistant.
Polybutylene succinate (PBS) has a wide range of uses and can be used in packaging, tableware, cosmetic bottles and medicine bottles, disposable medical supplies, agricultural films, slow-release materials for pesticides and fertilizers, biomedical polymer materials, etc.
4. Aliphatic aromatic copolyester
The aliphatic aromatic random copolyester (Ecoflex) manufactured by BASF in Germany has monomers of: adipic acid, terephthalic acid, and 1,4-butanediol. The current production capacity is 140,000 tons/year. At the same time, biodegradable plastic products based on polyester and starch have been developed.
5. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)
Water-soluble PVA film is a new type of plastic product that has emerged internationally. It utilizes the film-forming properties, water, and biodegradability of PVA, and can be completely degraded into CO2 and H2O, making it a truly green and high-tech environmentally friendly packaging material.
6. Carbon dioxide copolymer
A new type of synthetic material under research. Using carbon dioxide as a monomer raw material, under the action of a bimetallic coordination PBM-type catalyst, when activated to a higher degree, it undergoes a copolymerization reaction with epoxides to generate aliphatic polycarbonate (PPC). After post-treatment, carbon dioxide resin material is obtained.
