Biodegradable plastic bags, PLA compostable plastic bags, clothing bags, food bags, custom-made
The plastic bags we use casually every day cause serious problems and burdens to the environment. Plastic bags cause serious environmental problems , According to the China Plastics Processing Industry Association's Professional Committee for Plastics Recycling, China uses 1 billion plastic bags every day, and the daily consumption of various other plastic bags exceeds 2 billion. This means every Chinese person uses at least 2 plastic bags per day. Today, Shunxingyuan Packaging, a professional flexible packaging manufacturer, wants to remind everyone to use fewer plastic bags, and also suggests choosing some "degradable" plastic bags to replace general plastic bags for use. Below are some concepts about biodegradable plastic bags, hoping to help everyone clarify misunderstandings about biodegradable plastic bags.
Some "degradable plastic bags" have appeared on the market. People might think that plastic bags with "degradable" in their name should all be degradable and environmentally friendly. However, this is not the case. First, only when a plastic bag can eventually turn into water and carbon dioxide is it truly an environmentally friendly and eco-friendly bag. The so-called "eco-friendly" plastic bags on the market mainly include these types: degradable plastic bags, biodegradable plastic bags, and compostable plastic bags.

Degradable Plastic Bags
Polymers in degradable plastic bags undergo partial or complete damage due to UV radiation, oxidative corrosion, or biological corrosion. This means changes in performance, such as fading, surface cracking, and fragmentation.
Biodegradable Plastic Bags
Biodegradable plastic bags undergo a biochemical process where organic matter is completely or partially converted into water, carbon dioxide /methane, energy, and new biomass under the action of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi).
Compostable Plastic Bags
Compostable plastic bags can be biodegraded under specific conditions and timelines in high-temperature soil, usually requiring industrial composting to achieve better degradation efficiency.
From the above three types, if a plastic bag is a biodegradable plastic bag or a compostable plastic bag, it will eventually disappear from the environment by biodegrading into water and carbon dioxide, achieving a truly "eco-friendly" effect!
However, if the plastic bag is a "degradable" plastic bag, specifically including "photodegradable" or "thermo-oxidative degradable," it can only turn the plastic bag into fine plastic fragments, which is not conducive to plastic recycling and cleanup, and fragmented plastic entering the environment will cause more pollution problems. Therefore, this kind of "degradable" plastic bag is not environmentally friendly. 。
Note:
Photodegradable Plastic Bag : Plastic whose degradation is caused by natural light action Bag ; light is a type of UV radiation, which can only cause partial or complete damage to polymers.
Thermo-oxidative Degradable Plastic Bag : Plastic whose degradation is caused by heat and/or oxidation Bag ; thermo-oxidative degradation belongs to oxidative corrosion, which can only cause partial or complete damage to polymers.
So, how to distinguish between biodegradable plastic bags and compostable plastic bags? Let's take a look.

Plastic Bag Labeling Diagram
Properly produced biodegradable /compostable plastic bags must be marked with the standard and material used as shown in the image above. Among them, the recycling symbol indicates that the plastic bag is recyclable; the 04 inside the recycling symbol is the specific recycling digital identifier for low-density polyethylene (LDPE); the >PE-LD< below the recycling symbol indicates the raw material of the plastic bag; and "GB/T 21661-2008" to the right of "Plastic Shopping Bag" indicates the production standard followed by the plastic shopping bag.
Therefore, when choosing biodegradable or compostable plastic bags, you first need to check whether there is a national standard plastic bag label below the biodegradable or compostable plastic bag, and then judge based on the raw material of the plastic bag under the environmental label. Commonly used raw materials for biodegradable or compostable plastic bags are PLA, PBAT.

This biodegradable plastic bag is composed of a copolymer of butylene adipate and butylene terephthalate ( PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA) with 20% starch.

The image above shows a foreign biodegradable plastic bag that complies with ASTM D6400 (USA) and EN13432 (EU) standards for plastic bag degradation performance.
In addition, international standards for biodegradable and compostable plastic bags are relatively mature. Therefore, as long as you see the relevant standard symbols and standard numbers in the image below, you can basically confirm that the material is biodegradable or compostable.
