How much do you know about stand-up pouches?
The English name for stand-up pouches originated from the French company Thimonier. In 1963, Mr. M. Louis Doyen, then CEO of Thimonier, successfully applied for a patent for Doypack stand-up pouches. Since then, Doypack has become the official name for stand-up pouches, used to this day. It gained widespread recognition in the US market in the 1990s and subsequently became popular worldwide.
Stand-up pouches are a relatively new packaging format, offering advantages in enhancing product grade, improving shelf visual appeal, ease of carrying, convenience of use, freshness preservation, and sealability. Stand-up pouches are laminated from multiple layers, and can also have 2-layer, 3-layer or other specifications and materials, depending on the product being packaged. An oxygen barrier layer can be added as needed to reduce oxygen permeability and extend the shelf life of the product.
I. Application Range of Stand-up Pouches

Stand-up pouch packaging is mainly used for clothing and apparel, cosmetics, hardware and electronics, fruit juices and beverages, sports drinks, bottled water, fruit jellies, and condiments.
II. Classification of Stand-up Pouches

To date, stand-up pouches are basically divided into the following five types:
1. Ordinary Stand-up Pouches:
General stand-up pouches, using a four-seal design, cannot be resealed or reopened. These pouches are generally used in the industrial goods industry.
2. Stand-up Pouches with Spouts:
Stand-up pouches with spouts are more convenient for pouring or sucking out contents, and can be resealed and reopened. They can be considered a combination of stand-up pouches and ordinary bottle mouths. These pouches are generally used in daily necessities packaging, for holding liquids, colloids, semi-solid products such as beverages, shower gels, shampoos, ketchup, edible oil, and jellies.
3. Stand-up Pouches with Zippers:
Stand-up pouches with zippers can also be resealed and reopened. Because the zipper is not completely sealed and the sealing strength is limited, this type is not suitable for sealing liquids and volatile substances. Depending on the sealing method, they are divided into four-seal and three-seal types. Four-seal means that in addition to the zipper seal, there is another ordinary seal at the factory. When using, the ordinary seal must be torn open first, and then the zipper is used for repeated opening and closing. This method solves the problem of low zipper sealing strength and poor transportation. The three-seal type uses the zipper seal directly as the seal, generally used for light products. Stand-up pouches with zippers are generally used for packaging light solids such as candies, biscuits, and jellies, but four-seal stand-up pouches can also be used for packaging heavier products such as rice and cat litter.
4. Stand-up Pouches with Simulated Spouts:
Stand-up pouches with simulated spouts combine the convenience of spouted pouches with the low cost of ordinary stand-up pouches. The spout function is achieved through the shape of the pouch itself. However, pouches with simulated spouts cannot be resealed, so they are generally used for packaging disposable liquids, colloids, and semi-solid products such as beverages and jellies.
5. Irregular Shaped Stand-up Pouches:

These are various new stand-up pouches with different shapes based on traditional pouch types, such as waist-cinched designs, bottom deformation designs, and handle designs. With social progress, improved aesthetics, and intensified competition in various industries, the design and printing of stand-up pouches have become increasingly rich and varied, and their forms are becoming more numerous. Irregular shaped stand-up pouches are gradually replacing traditional stand-up pouches.
